Château de Javarzay

The Javarzay castle was reconstructed in 1514 by François de Rochechouart, governor of Genoa. All that is left of what was once the most imposing castle in Deux-Sèvres is the building bringing together the two towers and the chapel. The left wing was destroyed long ago, and the right wing constructed at a later date.

In 1862, the Javarzay castle was awarded the status of a historical monument, which now houses a headdress museum and a room dedicated to Jean-François Cail, one of the five principal 19th-century manufacturers. A Renaissance castle (16th century), it nonetheless conserves a feudal aspect.

The castle can be visited, as well as a (fishing) lake and an arboretum nearby.
